New Podcast: “New Ambient Singles (Ambient Rushton Podcast 143)”

Hi, this is Mark Rushton of markrushton.com – thanks for listening to my podcast of original or live ambient and electronic music and field recordings. This is Podcast #143 produced on Sunday, November 18 of 2018.

***

As of November 3rd, 2018, I am affiliated with and have paintings at the Leopold Gallery in Kansas City, in the Brookside neighborhood, at 324 W 63rd St. If you’re in the Kansas City area, stop by and have a look. My paintings are available for viewing at their web site: leopoldgallery.com  Link is in the description. Leopold Gallery is also coordinating any private commissions.

While that’s big news, you’re listening to this podcast because of the ambient sounds. Along those lines, I’ve been releasing new tracks every couple of weeks. If you follow me on Spotify and listen to the weekly Spotify Release Radar playlist, you’ve probably noticed this. Following me on Spotify is the easiest way to find out about new tracks.

Eventually, after I’ve released 7 or 8 singles, these tracks will be compiled and released as an album. For the foreseeable future, this is how I plan to release new music: a new single track every couple of weeks with an album every 3 to 4 months.

Right now, in this podcast, I’ll play portions of those singles.

First up is a snippet from “Refactoring Rainy Dreams”, then part of “Starwaves”, followed by a section of “Radio Transmission From the Large Magellanic Cloud, then “Docking in Outer Space”, and finally a portion of my forthcoming single, to be released on November 22nd, “Deep Hover”.

Thanks for listening. I’ll be back soon with another podcast.

New Podcast: “Falling Midnight Sevenism (Ambient Rushton Podcast 141)”

Hi, this is Mark Rushton of markrushton.com – thanks for listening to my podcast of original or live ambient and electronic music and field recordings. This is Podcast #141 produced on Friday, September 21 of 2018.

This is a little bit different kind of podcast because the music I’m presenting is not mine, but rather it’s a remix I did of another artist’s work.

The Assignment: Rework some very quiet music by making it even more sedate.

Last week, about 60 members of the Disquiet Junto recorded ambient music for the middle of the night, also known as Disquiet Junto 0350. The specific request was to “Make very quiet music for very late at night for very fragile psyches.”

For this week’s assignment, I selected select a track by another artist, from last week, and proceeded to dial it down even further.

I had to consider what edges the music has that might be smoothed out, what drama it has that might be subsumed. I was to consider how I might do such things while retaining something that is inherently listenable.

So I reworked Sevenism’s track “midnight solo (falling leaf) disquiet0350” – (a link to that track is in the description) https://soundcloud.com/7777777777/midnight-solo-falling-leaf-disquiet0350 which was mostly quiet piano playing

The version I posted for the 351st Disquiet Junto was 2 minutes long. This is the 20 minute version.

Sevenism has given me permission to post this version in the podcast.

I’m also including a link in the description to Sevenism’s discography on Bandcamp and Spotify, which is rather considerable. He’s released 32 albums so far in 2018: https://sevenism.bandcamp.com/ and https://open.spotify.com/artist/44vR1rYUxb5tnXqqXOcGFg?si=-iQBGJNoTMO97qdL1WkBAg

New Podcast: “Dohm Rushton (Ambient Rushton Podcast 140)”

Hi, this is Mark Rushton of markrushton.com – thanks for listening to my podcast of original or live ambient and electronic music and field recordings. This is Podcast #140 produced on September 13 of 2018.

For this podcast, I’ve extended a track I made for the 350th Disquiet Junto, also known as Selected Insomniac Works. The track is called Dohm Rushton. D-O-H-M Rushton.

The Assignment: Make very quiet music for very late at night for very fragile psyches.

Step 1: It’s the middle of the night, long past dusk and long before dawn. You can’t sleep.

Step 2: Think about what kind of music you’d want to hear right now — super quiet, super subtle, unlikely to wake you, potentially to ease you back to the comfort of your pillow, or at least to calm your mind.

Step 3: Record the sort of music that Step 2 made you imagine.

If I could program my Marpac Dohm, a white noise generator I use to help me sleep, I’d get it to play some of my own sounds, like what you’re hearing now.

New Podcast: Nearly There (Ambient Rushton Podcast 139)

Hi, this is Mark Rushton of markrushton.com – thanks for listening to my podcast of original or live ambient and electronic music and field recordings. This is Podcast #139 produced on Friday, August 31 of 2018.

In this podcast, I’m revisiting and extending a piece I made in 2012 for the Disquiet Junto. This was from the fourth Junto, started on January 31st of 2012, and involved remixing sounds from Marcus Fisher’s track “Never There”, originally released on his 2012 album, Collected Dust.

While I had all the project files that Fisher originally provided, some of the loops I added in 2012 have become lost, and so I had to leave them out. Then I repeated some sections and extended it out to nearly 10 minutes. If you want, you can hear my original remix on SoundCloud – a link is in the description.

Thanks for listening. I’ll be back soon with another podcast.

New Podcast: Encryption Key (Ambient Rushton Podcast 136)

This podcast contains a 27 minute track by my alter ego “Chillout Preservation Collective”. It’s kind of a dub ambient thing, and rather minimal in nature.

Why do I release tracks under pseudonyms? Well, first because it’s easy to do in this modern digital era. If I’ve got something I’ve made that I think is outside the realm of what I normally do, then I might as release it on it’s own. I’ll tell a small number of people following along about it, whether it be via podcast or my email newsletter, and blog post. It doesn’t have to be a big deal. Second, why not? When I started getting into music in the 80s, I was always fascinated by artists who released things under various names.
