Mark Rushton is an ‘ambient’ painter who uses acrylic paints to create non-objective artworks and imaginary landscapes using primed canvas or synthetic paper.
Rushton studied painting at the University of Iowa and the Kansas City Art Institute, but has been working on his own since the early 1990s.
He has been influenced by aspects of paintings by Fairfield Porter, Pierre Bonnard, Berthe Morisot, Mark Rothko, and Philip Hershberger.
Sound has also been an important influence on Rushton’s art. Jazz, ambient, and avant-garde musicians such as Bud Powell, Harold Budd, Fennesz, and Ryuichi Sakamoto, along with Rushton’s own music, have provided an influential soundtrack while working on paintings.
